Encompassing vision of physical education

The Research Group on Olympic Studies and Health Sciences (GEOCS), led by Professors Rafael Baptista and Luciano Castro, has the primary objective of performing scientific studies in the field of physical education in two broad research areas. The first, called Educational, Social, and Cultural Aspects of Physical Education, is dedicated to the study of culture, education, society, and Olympic studies. Its goal is to establish and expand projects and research on Olympic education, contributing to the construction of a cultural legacy for the 2016 Olympic Games. The second area, called Biodynamics of Human Movement, has the primary purpose of studying the fields of physical activity and health, biomechanics, kinanthropometry, kinesiology, postural education, and exercise physiology. The goal of this study is to establish the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of PUCRS (Fefid) as a center of sports excellence.

Among the current projects is the development of a human centrifuge moved by exercise, a project of the Engineering and Aerospace Biomechanics Laboratories of the Microgravity Center (MicroG) of the University. The equipment, powered by human strength, will allow for the study of the effects of exposure to simulated hypergravity on human physiology.

GEOCS represents the fusion of two pioneering research groups at Fefid: Olympic Studies (GPEO) and the Evaluation and Research in Physical Activity (Gapafi). The current configuration maintains academic partnerships within and beyond PUCRS. Internally, collaboration occurs with the Virtual Reality Group of the School of Informatics, the Microgravity Center of the School of Engineering, the Geriatrics and Gerontology Institute, the School of Architecture and Urban Design, and the School of Languages and Literature. The inter-institutional partnerships are with the Nucleus for Studies on History and Memory of Sports and Physical Education, headquartered at UFRGS, and the Olympic Museum of Qatar.
