An epistemological reflection on science education

What is the nature of scientific knowledge? How did it unfold in the course of history? What are its methods? How do such ideas relate with science education at the different educational levels? These are some of the questions that elicit debates at the Research Group on the Relationship between the Nature of Science and Science Education, chaired by Professor Regina Maria Rabello Borges.

Created in 2001 at the Museum of Sciences and Technology and located since 2008 at the Laboratory of Education in Science and Biology (LECBio) in the School of Biosciences, the group focuses on epistemological problems using projects in science education that emphasizes school assignments integrated with interactive museums, science clubs, and science centers. The activities address the foundations of the relationship between the nature of science and scientific literacy and the repercussions on fundamental education, analysis of theory-practice integration, assessment of results to support further investigations, and selfassessment of the conceptions and actions related to teaching and research in science and technology education.

Funded by the CNPq, CAPES, and FAPERGS agencies, the interdisciplinary activities of the group include professors and researchers at PUCRS, other HEIs and schools, students from the Graduate Program in Science and Mathematical Education (Educem), and undergraduate students in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

The current phase of the project includes searching for connections in studies involving science centers and museums at various Brazilian areas. Studies on that subject are being subjected to comparisons to elucidate the history of science education in the country.

The results of those debates, including partnerships with universities such as UCS, Furg, Univates, UFBA, UFPE, and UFMG, are consolidated and divulgated by books published using project resources, which are distributed to researchers and libraries across Brazil.
