Understanding the Church in the present time

An analysis of the literature, courses, and lectures are some of the activities performed by the Research Group on Ecclesiology and Emergent Problems, to understand the subjects related to the Church and its role in society. These activities are performed within the context of research on Theology and the Religious Experience.

Currently, the attention of researchers focuses on four research projects: Ecclesiology Today, Religiosity Today, Permanent Diaconate, and Features of the Ecclesiologic Thought of German theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar. Ecclesiology Today is based on Jesus Christ’s Beloved Church, a book that is widely recommended in theology courses in Brazil.

To understand how youths manifest their religious experiences, project Religiosity Today surveyed 1,104 university students of PUCRS to assess their understanding of ethical values.

Project Permanent Diaconate aims to understand the history and mission of deacons within the Church; their activity as missionary disciples ordained to serve the Word and charity; and their human, spiritual, doctrinal, and pastoral formation. Additionally, the document edited by the Vatican International Theological Commission on this subject is currently being translated.

The group’s next research projects, involving professors, undergraduate grant holders, and master’s students in the Graduate Program in Theology of PUCRS, will approach the Vatican Council II and its continuation until 2015. These studies will address the Council’s history, documents, and hermeneutics.

The research conducted by the group is divulgated in Brazil and abroad. The group’s chair, Professor Geraldo Luiz Borges Hackmann, contributes to the academic production and representativeness of the university as a member of the Episcopal Commission on the Doctrine of the Federal Association of Bishops of Brazil and the International Theological Commission of the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith.
