Excellence in the practice and study of surgery for obesity

The Research Group on Surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome is led by Professor Cláudio Corá Mottin and has two research areas: Metabolic and type 2 diabetes surgery and Obesity and metabolic syndrome. This Group is considered to be the scientific branch of the Center for Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (COM) of São Lucas Hospital (HSL) of PUCRS.

Created in 2000, COM is currently considered to be a center of excellence in bariatric surgery and is of both national and international significance. The research benefits from the structure of COM and is focused on care for the obese. The studies are performed by researchers from different areas, such as medicine, nutrition, physiotherapy, psychology, and nursing. On average, five articles are published annually in top-ranked international journals, a number which could reach ten in 2012.

The study that currently stands out the most is performed in partnership with the Ministry of Health and covers the Retrospective Prospective Evaluation of Brazilian Bariatric Surgery (ARPCBB/AVABAR). This study, coordinated by COM, has been performed by eight Brazilian centers since the first semester of 2011. It is a study involving the collection of field data with a focus on bariatric surgery in the national territory. It seeks to observe the real scenario of this treatment in Brazil, to determine the outcomes considered to be essential, to see the advantages and disadvantages of treatment, and, finally, to be able to define the treatment as cost-effective for Brazilian public health. The idea is to monitor thousands of patients operated on over a period of ten years to obtain a significant sample for Brazilian bariatric surgery.

Other studies cover topics such as the nutritional profiles of patients with morbid obesity; the evaluation of the safety, effectiveness, and durability of the surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes; and the evaluation of the glycemic control and the weight of patients subjected to intestinal bypass surgeries due to ulcer or gastric neoplasia. Recently, the group signed a partnership with the company Johnson & Johnson to promote special and select courses related to this field.
