National reference in nephrology

The Nephrology Service of São Lucas Hospital, which has been active for approximately four decades, and the Research Group in Nephrology have made PUCRS a Brazilian leader in teaching, research, and assistance in clinical nephrology, hypertension, pregnancy hypertensive disorders, dialysis, and transplantations.

In addition to the School of Medicine and HSL, the Institute of Biomedical Research (IPB) and the Clinical Research Center (CPC) are involved, consolidating the units of interest. All of these structures are located at the PUCRS campus, providing the group with interdisciplinary work with professionals from different fields of medicine, nursing, biology, nutrition, and biochemistry.

One of the noteworthy activities is the research on hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, including preeclampsia syndrome, considered to be the largest cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. In addition, teachers and researchers of the group have maintained the renal transplant group since 1978, having surpassed 1,000 cases. In particular, the performance of transplants in hypersensitive patients is noteworthy.

The aforementioned activities are in addition to kidney and/ or pancreas transplants in patients with type 1 diabetes and experimental transplants of pancreatic islets. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, methods of substituting the affected kidney, have been performed for more than 30 years at HSL.

Registered in the Directory of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) since 1994, this research structure consists of 13 researchers who work with undergraduate and graduate students. Cooperation among different stages of academic formation (assistance, outreach, and research) constitutes the multifaceted degree in nephrology at the School of Medicine, HSL and IPB, yielding national and international partnerships in research and training.
