The health of caregivers

The activities developed by the Research Group on Health Education and Work (Getras), led by Professor Beatriz Sebben Ojeda, have the primary objectives of contributing to the production of knowledge in the field, the pedagogical formation of future health professionals, permanent education, the development and evaluation of educational technologies, and the qualification of the work process of a multidisciplinary health team.

The initiatives are based on three research areas: Health education, Worker health, and Health work. The first promotes interdisciplinary and interinstitutional studies related to the theme of health education; it articulates study, research, and outreach activities related to health education, and it contributes to the (re)construction of pedagogical projects. Worker health seeks to analyze the demographic, social, and gender characteristics and the health conditions of workers. It also seeks to identify demographic, social, gender, environmental, and work conditions and the organization of health services that influence the health-disease process. In the research line Health work, there are studies related to work in the field of health, and activities are performed for teaching, research, and the broadening of the field of health work.

Included in the research developed by Getras is the study of work stress and the health of professionals in the hospital setting. The investigation covers aspects of the work and their interface with the health-disease process of workers (nursing, physiotherapy, medicine, nutrition, general services, maintenance, laundry, cleaning, and administration). The study, coordinated by researchers of the School of Nursing, Nutrition, and Physiotherapy and by the School of Medicine of PUCRS, investigates the association of the categories of stress, psychological demands, and control over work with arterial hypertension, musculoskeletal disorders, and lesser psychological disorders.
