The preservation of the memory of national communication

One of the main goals of Research Nucleus on Communication Science (Nupecc) is to organize, preserve, and divulgate raw materials that enable the investigation and understanding of the history of Social Communication in Brazil as a whole and, more particularly, in Rio Grande do Sul. The research team, chaired by Antonio Carlos Hohlfeldt and including undergraduate grant holders, focuses on the identification, cataloging, separation, recording, storing, and divulgation of documents. For example, the digitization of the 60 issues of the newspaper Movimento is currently markedly advanced.

Some publications are currently being recorded and may be accessed in PDF format at the www.pucrs.br/famecos/nupecc website or at Issuu. Nupecc’s aim is to perform the identical methods as the Faculty of Literature in the case of Revista do Globo: to produce CDs that allow research conducted according to date, subject, and other indexing criteria. This project, which also includes the newspaper Opinião, follows the pattern employed by UNESCO and will be useful for studies conducted by scholars from the History of Journalism and History of Publicity and Advertising.

In parallel, Nupecc is currently subjecting the magazine TV Sul to that same process. TV Sul was the first magazine devoted to television in Rio Grande do Sul and was published from 1963 to 1969 when the TV program was local and TV Piratini and TV Gaúcha were aired. Published every two weeks with a pocket-format, TV Sul had large success in the state population. In addition to the TV program, TV Sul carried articles explaining the operation of television, which was novel at that time, and advertisements, which corresponded to the programs’ sponsors.

The Nucleus’ website allows access to Brazilian digitized magazines and newspapers, such as the Pato Macho newspaper, and articles and publications from countries such as Mozambique, Angola, and Cape Verde. Nupecc established important partnerships with, among others, the National Library at Rio de Janeiro, the National Library of France, and the Brasiliana Collection - Correio Braziliense.
