The vanguard in neuropsychology

Led by Professor Rochele Paz Fonseca, the Research Group in Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology (GNCE) was created in 2008, with a strong multidisciplinary character, bringing together researchers from psychology, medicine, speech therapy, and education. Its main research fields are Neuropsychological assessment – development of clinical as experimental instruments, Cognitive neuropsychology, Developmental neuropsychology, Neuropsychological profiles of neurological and psychiatric populations, Neuropsychological rehabilitation, and Neurocognitive tasks and advanced neuroimaging techniques (DTI and fMRI).

Neurological, psychiatric and healthy populations are assessed. The role of individual and sociocultural factors on human cognition is investigated, towards a characterization of neurocognitive development curves from 6 to 90 years old. The clinical populations are diversified, including adults with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative disorders (HIV/AIDS, frontotemporal dementia, and dysfunction due to mood disorders. This laboratory still looks for neurocognitive markers of language and executive functions for ADHD’s differential diagnosis.

Regarding intervention projects, GNCE also develops programs of neuropsychological rehabilitation for executive functions (attention, inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed) and for communication. It also trains health and education professionals, aiming to transfer knowledge and products to community. Furthermore, the group is active in the Service for Care and Research in Psychology of the School of Psychology for patients who have had stroke and traumatic brain injury and who have mood disorders, attention deficit disorder, and hyperactivity, besides learning difficulties or cognitive complaints.

The main partners with GNCE are UFRGS, UFRJ, Puc-Rio, USP, University of Montreal (Canada), Catholic University of Lisbon (Portugal), and Toulouse Le Mirail (France).
