Public health benefits of oral medicine

The Research Group on Cancer and Other Pathologies of the Oral and Maxillofacial Region develops studies linked to two research areas: Diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region and clinical, immunological, and anatomopathological studies and Diagnostic methods in oral medicine.

To perform the research, the team uses the infrastructure of the Oral Medicine Service of São Lucas Hospital (HSL) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), which has a collection of approximately 25,000 medical records from treated patients and 20,000 surgical specimens. The items come from the Pathological Anatomy Laboratory located at HSL and have supported studies since 1988. In addition, the researchers have the support of the services and laboratories of the Schools of Biosciences, Medicine, and Pharmacy of PUCRS.

The goals of the proposed work are to understand the phenomena involved in the onset and progression of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region and to offer advances in diagnostic resources and therapeutic options based on clinical and laboratory research. The broader objective is to provide a better quality of life to the patients suffering from these ailments.

The research results are systematically published in qualified periodicals, both national and international, and reflect the regional profile of the diseases in the target population, consisting of patients of the Unified Health System (SUS), the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine of PUCRS, and private clinics in the Greater Porto Alegre region and other regions of Rio Grande do Sul state. This allows for a comparison with available data from other reference centers in Brazil and abroad.

The group, led by professor Maria Antonia Zancanaro de Figueiredo, has five lecturers of the School of Dentistry, fourteen master’s and doctoral students specializing in oral medicine in the Graduate Program in Dentistry, and undergraduate science students.
